Skies of Arcadia’s combat is similarly deceptive in how it refines the usual JRPG structure. The story of Skies of Arcadia is vast and winding, but it always grounds events into the emotional journeys and maturity of these three intrepid buccaneers. Big evil empires staffed by a cadre of gimmicky villains (strong guy, mad scientist, old guy, woman) aren’t new, but the baddies in Arcadia’s Valuan Armada are each extremely clever versions of these tropes, providing depth and nuance to what seems, on its surface, too familiar.Įvery main character is likewise an incredibly well-developed and fleshed out character, while the core trio of Vyse, Aika, and Fina are some of the most endearing and relatable party members ever to grace a CRT TV. While this may sound like a fairly standard fantasy adventure, the genius of Skies of Arcadia comes in its execution. A plucky air pirate, Vyse of the Blue Rogues, and his teammate Aika, meet a mysterious girl named Fina and embark on a planet-wide quest to save the world from the evil Valuan Empire. In the magical world of Arcadia, six elemental moons govern the floating islands that make up the planet, and by using the magic inherent in pieces of said moons, people have been able to create airships and build societies. In 2000, one such miracle of game design, Skies of Arcadia, emerged from the clouds, and landed on the Dreamcast, before embarking on a journey to the GameCube under the name Skies of Arcadia: Legends in 2002. But every now and then, a bold new title will emerge, fully formed, not tied down to any existing IP, presenting a fresh, original view of what a video game adventure can be.

You can download a mini game and play it seperatly. Skies of Arcadia lets you fully use the vmu. These floating replicas of 18th centruy sea faring vessels make traveling to the various places in the game much more enjoyable than having to walk down long paths. One of the best features of Skies of Arcadia is the extensive use of Air Ships. The character's controls are more responsive than most rpgs, this is helped greatly with very good camera controls. The graphics even today look great, comparable to some early Playstation2 rpgs. The storyline is emersive, but unlike most FinalFantasy games its not overlycomplicated and you probably will understand whats going on. This game surprised really surprised me and I'll explain why. It did manage however to get Skies of Arcadia. The Dreamcast had a short life, mainly because it didn't raise enough interest of developers.

You can either find all the secrets or not, once you do it gives you an option of looking for adventures with massive full scale ship battles. The game itself has a real feel for its environment, a tremendous 3d world to navigate around. Do not settle for a hacked version because Echelon released this game with random pauses and glitches. Any HD-TV monitor capable setup will show the artistic rendering of the Dreamcast at its height, with bumpmapping and without the fake cartoony stylizations the gamecube version brings you. It is what truly makes the game fun, especially in 640x480 dpi. The character models are vivid and fluid, surpassing the gamecube version in some aspects. The graphics usually don't make the game but in this case they do. The best part of the game has to do with the graphics. I also enjoyed a very interesting storyboard. This game is really fun, it has alot of characters with interesting backgrounds.
